Spotlight: Q & AMatthew Broderick

Where are you from? Loveland, Colorado

Where did you go to undergrad and law school? Undergrad: University of California Santa Barbara. Law School: University of Denver Sturm College of Law.

Where are you working and what is your practice area?

Fennemore Craig, P.C. I’m a civil litigator focused largely on medical and legal malpractice defense.

What led you to that practice area?

My first summer internship I worked at a Plaintiff’s firm and we took a multi-million dollar medical malpractice case to trial in federal court.  After two weeks of testimony, Rule 50 motions, objections, and argument, I was hooked – I knew I wanted to be a malpractice trial attorney.  Although I switched to the defense side, I am literally working my dream job and I am very grateful.

What do you like best about that practice area?

From both the factual and legal perspectives, no two cases are alike and they present  constant challenges.

What organizations are you involved in?

I have been a member of the Rhone Brackett Inn of Court since 2010.

And I was recently appointed to the Colorado Defense Lawyers Association Board as the New Attorney liaison.

Outside of the law, what are your hobbies?

Hiking, camping, and when possible, skiing.  I have been getting more into golf, but I am still very, very bad.  And my wife and I love attending sporting events, especially Rockies games.

What are you passionate about?

With respect to the practice of law, excellence.  I believe that we are privileged to be members of this profession and that we ought to strive for excellence in everything we do.

With respect to life generally, I am passionate about civil duty, which is why I am very excited to be a part of the DBA-YLD.  The first few years of my career were far too focused on my personal practice, and I am very excited about the opportunity to get involved with the community and help out where I can.

Any advice for other, young lawyers?

Ask for help as often as you can.  Never be shy about approaching a fellow attorney about a legal issue, and try to present both a problem with a solution so that your colleague can weigh in.

If you weren’t a lawyer, you’d be?

A starving, and probably unsuccessful, television writer (comedy genre).

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Open, encouraging, and committed.

Social media network of choice?  Contact information?

I admit it… Facebook.

Most random job you have ever had.

I was a waiter at a shellfish restaurant (no fish, just shellfish), and I had to grab and bring live crabs (ranging from 1.5 to as much as 12 lbs.) to customers’ tables to show them off before they ate them.  It was awesome.
